Bobby DeBarge was an American singer, songwriter, musician, and producer. He was best known as the lead singer of the popular R&B and funk group, Switch, in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He also had a successful solo career and worked as a producer for other artists. His musical career was marred by numerous personal problems ranging from drug trafficking charges to substance abuse.
Bobby DeBarge was born on March 5, 1956 in Detroit, Michigan. He was the second oldest of ten siblings. His father Robert DeBarge Sr. was a gospel singer and his mother Etterlene Abney was a choir director.
DeBarge’s musical career began in the late 1970s when he formed the group Switch with his brother Tommy DeBarge and other musicians. The group released several successful albums including Switch (1978), Switch II (1979), This Is My Dream (1980), Reaching for Tomorrow (1981), and Am I Still Your Boyfriend? (1984).
In addition to his work with Switch, Bobby DeBarge also had a successful solo career. He released two solo albums, It’s Not Over (1985) and The Heart Is Not So Smart (1987).
DeBarge also worked as a producer for other artists including his siblings’ group DeBarge. He produced their hit song Rhythm of the Night which was featured in the movie The Last Dragon.
Unfortunately, DeBarge’s musical career was marred by numerous personal problems ranging from drug trafficking charges to substance abuse. He died on August 16, 1995 at the age of 39 due to complications from AIDS.
