**What Is Quantum?**

**What is a quantum?**

In physics, a quantum (plural: quanta) is the minimum amount of any physical entity (physical property) involved in an interaction. The fundamental notion that a physical property can be "quantized" is referred to as "the hypothesis of quantization". This means that the magnitude of the physical property can take on only discrete values consisting of integer multiples of one quantum.

The word quantum is the neuter singular of the Latin interrogative adjective quantus, meaning "how much". "Quanta", the neuter plural, short for "quanta of electricity" (electrons), was used in a 1902 article on the photoelectric effect by Philipp Lenard, who credited Hermann von Helmholtz for using the word in the area of electricity. However, the word quantum in general was well known before 1900, e.g. quantum was used in E. A. Poe’s Loss of Breath. It was often used by physicians, such as in the term quantum satis, "the amount which is enough". Both Helmholtz and Julius von Mayer were physicians as well as physicists.

**Quantum mechanics**

Quantum mechanics is a fundamental theory in physics that provides a description of the physical properties of nature at the scale of atoms and subatomic particles. It is the foundation of all quantum physics including quantum chemistry, quantum field theory, quantum technology, and quantum information science.

Classical physics, the collection of theories that existed before the advent of quantum mechanics, describes many aspects of nature at an ordinary scale, while quantum mechanics explains the aspects of nature at very small scales. Most theories in classical physics can be derived from quantum mechanics as an approximation valid at large (macroscopic) scale.

Quantum mechanics differs from classical physics in many ways, including:

- Quantization: in quantum mechanics, energy, momentum, angular momentum, and other quantities are often restricted to discrete values.
- Wave-particle duality: objects have characteristics of both particles and waves.
- The uncertainty principle: given a complete set of initial conditions, there are limits to how accurately the value of a physical quantity can be predicted prior to its measurement.
- Quantum entanglement: objects can be linked together in such a way that they share the same fate, even when separated by a large distance.

**Applications of quantum mechanics**

Quantum mechanics has had a profound impact on our understanding of the universe and has led to the development of many new technologies, including:

- Lasers
- Transistors
- Nuclear weapons

Quantum sensing can be used to develop new sensors that are more sensitive and accurate than existing sensors.

Quantum technology is still in its early stages of development, but it has the potential to revolutionize many aspects of our lives.

**Quantum information science**

Quantum information science is a field of research that studies the use of quantum mechanics to process and transmit information. This includes topics such as quantum computing, quantum cryptography, and quantum teleportation.

Quantum information science has the potential to revolutionize many fields, including communication, security, and computing. For example, quantum cryptography can provide secure communication that is unbreakable by current methods. Quantum computers could be used to solve problems that are intractable for classical computers.

Quantum information science is a rapidly developing field, and new discoveries are being made all the time. As our understanding of quantum information science grows, we can expect to see even more revolutionary technologies emerge.

**The future of quantum**

The future of quantum is bright. Quantum mechanics is a powerful theory that has the potential to revolutionize many aspects of our lives. Quantum technology and quantum information science are still in their early stages of development, but they have the potential to solve many of the world’s most pressing problems.

Here are some of the ways that quantum could be used to solve real-world problems in the future:

**What Is Quantum**. WebQuantum, in physics, discrete natural unit, or packet, of energy, charge, angular momentum, or other physical property. Light, for example, appearing in some. WebQuantum physics is the study of matter and energy at the most fundamental level. It aims to uncover the properties and behaviors of the very building blocks of nature. While many.

Argonne’s Science 101 series takes you back to the basics, with plain-language explanations of the scientific concepts behind our pivotal discoveries and our biggest innovations.

In this Science 101: What is Quantum Mechanics video, Katherine Harmon – Argonne Scholar in the Materials Science Division – explains what quantum mechanics is.

Quantum mechanics is a theory that deals with the most fundamental bits of matter, energy and light and the ways they interact with each other to make up the world. This landmark theory originated in the early 20th century and is finding many real-world applications in the 21st century.

Applying quantum mechanics in the laboratory, Argonne scientists like Harmon and many others are developing technologies that could one day transform society and our understanding of the universe.

Quantum sensors could detect previously undetectable cancer cells. A quantum internet could ensure unhackable communication of messages and data. Quantum computers could solve complex problems classical computers cannot.

Quantum theory will also continue to advance our knowledge of the universe from the intricate dynamics deep within an atom to cosmic events as grand as the birth of the universe.
