    What Is Unit?

A unit is a standard quantity of a physical property, used as a factor to express occurring quantities of that property. Units of measurement were among the earliest tools invented by humans. Primitive societies needed rudimentary measures for many tasks: constructing dwellings of an appropriate size and shape, fashioning clothing, or bartering food or raw materials. The earliest known uniform systems of measurement seem to have all been created sometime in the 4th and 3rd millennia BC among the ancient peoples of Mesopotamia, Egypt and the Indus Valley, and perhaps also Elam in Persia as well.

In physics and metrology, units are standards for measurement of physical quantities that need clear definitions to be useful. Reproducibility of experimental results is central to the scientific method. A standard system of units facilitates this. Scientific systems of units are a refinement of the concept of weights and measures historically developed for commercial purposes.

The International System of Units (SI)

The International System of Units (SI) is the modern form of the metric system and the world's most widely used system of measurement. Established and maintained by the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM), it is the only system of measurement with an official status in nearly every country in the world, employed in science, technology, industry, and everyday commerce.

The SI comprises a coherent system of units of measurement starting with seven base units, which are the second (symbol s, the unit of time), metre (m, length), kilogram (kg, mass), ampere (A, electric current), kelvin (K, thermodynamic temperature), mole (mol, amount of substance), and candela (cd, luminous intensity). The system can accommodate coherent units for an unlimited number of additional quantities. These are called coherent derived units, which can always be represented as products of powers of the base units. Twenty-two coherent derived units have been provided with special names and symbols. The seven base units and the 22 coherent derived units with special names and symbols may be used in combination to express other coherent derived units. Since the sizes of coherent units will be convenient for only some applications and not for others, the SI provides twenty-four prefixes which, when added to the name and symbol of a coherent unit produce twenty-four additional (non-coherent) SI units for the same quantity; these non-coherent units are useful for expressing quantities of a very large or very small size.

    Other Systems of Units

Although the SI is the most widely used system of units in the world, there are a number of other systems of units that are still in use in some countries or for certain purposes. Some of the most common other systems of units include:

    • The imperial system: This system of units is still used in the United States, the United Kingdom, and a few other countries. It uses units such as the foot, yard, mile, pound, and gallon.
    • The customary units of the United States: This system of units is similar to the imperial system, but it includes some additional units, such as the cup, pint, quart, and fluid ounce.
    • The metric system: This system of units is based on the meter and the kilogram. It is used in many countries around the world, but it is not as widely used as the SI.
    • The Chinese system of units: This system of units is based on the chi and the jin. It is still used in some parts of China.
    • The Japanese system of units: This system of units is based on the shaku and the kan. It is still used in some parts of Japan.

    The Importance of Units

Units are important because they allow us to make quantitative comparisons between different quantities. For example, if we want to compare the length of two objects, we need to use a common unit of length. If we use different units of length, we will not be able to make a meaningful comparison.

Units are also important because they allow us to communicate our measurements to others in a clear and concise way. For example, if we want to tell someone how tall we are, we can say that we are 1.8 meters tall. This measurement is clear and concise, and it can be understood by anyone who knows the SI unit of length.

    Examples of Units

Here are some examples of units for different physical quantities:

    • Length: meter (m), foot (ft), yard (yd), mile (mi)
    • Mass: kilogram (kg), pound (lb), ounce (oz)
    • Time: second (s), minute (min), hour (h), day (d)
    • Temperature: Kelvin (K), Celsius (°C), Fahrenheit (°F)
    • Electric current: ampere (A)
    • Amount of substance: mole (mol)
    • Luminous intensity: candela (cd)

    Conversion Between Units

It is often necessary to convert between different units of measurement. For example, if we have a recipe
