What is an adverb?
An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. It can describe how, when, where, why, or to what extent something happens. Adverbs are often formed by adding the suffix -ly
to an adjective, but there are many adverbs that do not have this suffix.
For example, in the English sentence "The cat ran quickly," the adverb "quickly" modifies the verb "ran." It tells us how the cat ran. In the sentence "The house is very big," the adverb "very" modifies the adjective "big." It tells us to what extent the house is big.

How to identify adverbs in Arabic
Adverbs in Arabic can be identified by a few different features. First, they often end in the tanween al-fatah (nunation), which is a short vowel sound added to the end of nouns and adjectives. For example, the adverbs كثيراً
(a lot) and جداً
(very) both end in the tanween al-fatah.
Second, adverbs can be identified by their meaning. If a word modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb, then it is likely an adverb. For example, in the sentence المعلم يشرح الدرس ببطء
(The teacher explains the lesson slowly), the word ببطء
is an adverb because it modifies the verb يشرح
(explains).
