    What Is Adverbs List

Adverbs are words that modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They provide more information about the action or the quality of the subject/object/action in the sentence.

There are five main types of adverbs:

    • Adverbs of manner: how
    • Adverbs of place: where
    • Adverbs of time: when
    • Adverbs of frequency: how often
    • Adverbs of degree: to what extent

    Adverbs of manner

Adverbs of manner describe how something is done. They typically end in -ly, but some common adverbs of manner do not, such as fast, hard, and well.

Here are some examples of adverbs of manner:

    • Quickly: The car sped quickly down the highway.
    • Loudly: The child cried loudly.
    • Carefully: The student worked carefully on her homework.
    • Angrily: The man shouted angrily at the dog.
    • Happily: The dog wagged its tail happily.

    Adverbs of place

Adverbs of place describe where something is or happens. They can be divided into two categories: static adverbs and dynamic adverbs.

Static adverbs describe a fixed location, such as here, there, and inside. Dynamic adverbs describe movement, such as up, down, and away.

Here are some examples of adverbs of place:

    • Here: The cat is sitting here on the couch.
    • There: The park is over there.
    • Inside: The children are playing inside the house.
    • Up: The bird flew up into the tree.
    • Down: The ball rolled down the hill.

    Adverbs of time

Adverbs of time describe when something happens. They can be divided into two categories: definite adverbs and indefinite adverbs.

Definite adverbs describe a specific time, such as today, yesterday, and tomorrow. Indefinite adverbs describe a general time, such as soon, often, and never.

Here are some examples of adverbs of time:

    • Today: I am going to the store today.
    • Yesterday: I went to the movies yesterday.
    • Tomorrow: I am going to the library tomorrow.
    • Soon: The bus will be here soon.
    • Often: I go to the gym often.
    • Never: I have never been to Europe.

    Adverbs of frequency

Adverbs of frequency describe how often something happens. They can be divided into two categories: high frequency adverbs and low frequency adverbs.

High frequency adverbs describe actions that happen frequently, such as always, usually, and often. Low frequency adverbs describe actions that happen infrequently, such as rarely, seldom, and never.

Here are some examples of adverbs of frequency:

    • Always: I always brush my teeth before bed.
    • Usually: I usually go to work at 8:00 AM.
    • Often: I often go to the park on weekends.
    • Rarely: I rarely eat fast food.
    • Seldom: I seldom go to the movies.
    • Never: I have never smoked a cigarette.

    Adverbs of degree

Adverbs of degree describe the extent to which something is done or happens. They can be divided into two categories: intensifiers and de-intensifiers.

Intensifiers describe actions that are done to a great extent, such as very, extremely, and incredibly. De-intensifiers describe actions that are done to a lesser extent, such as quite, somewhat, and slightly.

Here are some examples of adverbs of degree:

    • Very: The cake was very delicious.
